Carl Roy is a production of Chad Alexander (I usually link to the winery, but this guy is under the radar, and he changes wineries/names faster than I can keep up with him.). As a reminder, Chad searches wineries for excess wine inventory, purchases the wine, and resells them under his label at a discount to the wineries’ prices. As part of his purchase, he agrees not to disclose the name of the winery that sold him the wine, but he can discuss location.
The 2009 Carl Roy Cabernet Sauvignon East Side Cuvee was a blend of wine from two sources, both in Napa Valley. The first source was Soda Canyon and the second was Howell Mountain. The wine’s ABV was 14.3%. I had a lot of difficult sourcing information on this wine.
This was another wine I found by way of Restaurant Nicholas. Given my hit or miss experience with their wines, I was unsure what to expect from Carl Roy. It turned out to be a pleasant surprise.
Prior to tasting, the wine was decanted for 2 hours.
Black fruit, red berries, and vanilla were all present on the nose. They were not blasting out in a “big Cab” way. They were more subdued and intermingled in a quiet confidence.
A sip from the glass found black fruit, with emphasis on black currant and blackberry, a touch of cherries, and a hint of cocoa. What a great flavor combination. There was something on the palate that told me there was another varietal in play, but alas, I cannot confirm nor deny (I could be wrong. I often am!). The tannins were soft from the start. This wine opened up fantastically as the hours progressed.
The finish was medium, accompanied by black fruit.
I would describe the wine as medium- to full-bodied. This wasn’t your typical big Napa Cab. My final notes on the wine read “warm and velvety”. In my experience, when a wine can be compared to a grilled cheese sandwich, it is usually a good thing…..a very good thing.
The 2009 Carl Roy Cabernet Sauvignon East Side Cuvee cost me $25. This wine was a nice, neat, little Cabernet. It would be perfect to serve as a “house” wine and I would buy it again. I am unsure what the supply is like, but if you happen to come across is, give it a try and let me know what you think of it, please.
